The Gopher Conference All-Star Basketball Team as picked by the coaches included: senior Roger Utpadel from Ellendale, senior Jim Grover from Waterville, freshman Chuck Wobbrock from Medford, junior Neil Burtness from New Richland, senior Tom Helleck and junior Dennis Turner from Blooming Prairie, senior Warren Johnson, senior John Tetzloff, sophomore Jim Tetzloff and junior Bill Mueller from Janesville, senior Arlen Klinder and junior Jay Rasmussen from Morristown.

The Wells-Easton boys won the Region 2A basketball title and a trip to the Minnesota State Tournament by defeating Luverne 52-44. Scoring leaders for W-E were Todd Thisius, 18 points, Terry Schultz 12 and Tom Niebuhr 10.

Named to the boys’ Gopher Conference All-Conference Basketball Team were: Dave Hagen, Tom Sorenson, Scott Tracy and Rick Pelzl from Ellendale-Geneva; Charlie Steidler from New Hartland, Mark Bleckeberg from Glenville. Named to the girls’ All-Conference were Laura Tordoff and Lynette Vanek from Glenville, Kelly Lageson from Ellendale-Geneva and Jodi Miller from New Richland-Hartland.

Named to the 1998-1999 All Big Nine Conference boys’ hockey team from Albert Lea High School were Nate Bryant, Travis Diaz, Casey Erickson and Dusty Wangen.

Jeff Schultz of ALHS and Justin Davis of Glenville-Emmons were named co-Players of the Year in the Albert Lea Tribune’s All-Area Boys Basketball Team. Named to the first team were Schultz, Davis, David Sherman from Lake Mills, Shane Thorson from Alden-Conger and Nick Cunningham from ALHS. Named to the second team were Josh Delger from Glenville-Emmons, Chad Knudson from New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva, Ryan Barnick from Alden-Conger, Nigel Millard from Northwood-Kensett and John Jacobs from United South Central.
