Wells’ musical legacy is captured on a newly released 2008 DVD. “Common Feeling” was written and produced for Wells in 1978 and again performed in 1994. The story involves local music man, Harry Gillam, who lived in Wells from the early 1900s until his death in 1929. Harry’s Maroon Band was the welcoming instrumental group at the Albert Lea Depot when William McKinley was campaigning for President in the early 1990s.
“Common Feeling” dialogue depicts a fictionalized history of four issues: nativism verses the German immigration, minority by race, political opinion and gender discrimination. As American teeters on the brink of World War I, events occurring on the streets of Wells intertwine and highlight these issues.
The two-act drama is structured as a Broadway show. “Farm Fragrance” (manure) was the hit of the fifteen composed songs written especially for Wells area. “Common Feeling” received national publicity when the musical’s article in the Minneapolis Tribune’s paper was distributed all over North America by the Associated Press
