Ten people were displaced from their apartments early this morning after a building fire Albert Lea police said originated at the rear of the Nasty Habit Bar & Grill.
Two were treated for smoke inhalation.
Albert Lea police and firefighters were dispatched to West William Street at 2:54 a.m. Buildings located at 126, 128 and 134 W. William St. were involved in the fire, according to a news release.
The Nasty Habit Bar & Grill’s main address is 134 W. William St., though it occupies the lower levels of three buildings.
The cause of the fire has not been determined.
Authorities evacuated residents in the upstairs apartments of the buildings, and two residents were sent to Albert Lea Medical Center with possible smoke inhalation, the release stated.
At 5 a.m., fire crews still were attempting to isolate and extinguish hot spots in the ceiling.
Brad Hegwood, owner of the Nasty Habit building, said he was pleased the residents were able to evacuate safely after smoke detectors went off quickly. The people were aided by the American Red Cross.
Hegwood said he received a call of the fire around 3 a.m. and credited the Albert Lea Fire Department for their courtesy and dedication at the scene.
There was no visible exterior damage to the front of the building. At the back, the only indication there might have been a fire was a broken window that Hegwood said authorities busted to let smoke through.
Though the exterior didn’t look like a fire occurred, the smell of the smoke still hung in the air this morning.
The Nasty Habit was the only business affected.
