The Albert Lea Senior Center will host its first ever soup and dessert fundraiser on April 28 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the senior center.

The board at the center decided to have the fundraiser because, just like for many people, money is tight and the senior center wants to continue to be able to keep the center running, Paula Juveland, director of the senior center, said. She said they still have $24,000 to raise by the end of the year, so the senior center board discussed fundraising ideas. The board thought a soup and dessert fundraiser would be not only fun to put on but fun for everyone in the community, she said.

The board members at the senior center will be making the soup. “We have very good cooks on the board. A lot of the fellas will be in the kitchen stirring up their brews,” Juveland said.

The soups available will be vegetable hamburger, chicken noodle, chili and wild rice.

As for the dessert, she said there will be a wide variety of items made by the staff, board members and senior center members. “We’ll all chip in. Whatever is your expertise, make it, bring it and we’ll serve it,” she said.

There will also be a silent auction as well as craft items and baked goods for sale. Juveland also said that if any soup is left over, she will be selling that as well. The silent auction will have a mix of items donated from people in the community. Juveland said she has already gotten calls from people who want to donate their items. If you would like to donate anything to the auction, bring it by the senior center.

The cost of the soup and dessert fundraiser is $6 for adults and $4 for children 10 and under.

The silent auction will run from 4 to 6:45 p.m. At 6:45 p.m. the highest bidder will get the item.

The soup and dessert fundraiser is open to the public.
