Editorial: Easy tips for a better city

Dan Buettner and the folks from Blue Zones and AARP are back in town today. We urge you to attend the meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Albert Lea High School. Buettner will speak about his venture to Greece.
In the meantime, we have suggestions for the citizens of Albert Lea for sprucing up the city, many of which we have editorialized before:
Form a group called the Albert Lea Beautification Committee. The group raises funds for trees, bushes, flowers and other vegetation for local roads. Many cities have such groups, especially in the South. Good targets: I-35, I-90, Highway 13, Highway 65. Think of the impression to be made on folks who drive by or through.
Install bike racks. As Albert Lea increases its means for bicycles to get around, let’s not forget about bike racks. Don’t just leave it to the city. Businesses need to give the cyclists places to park their vehicles. It only makes business sense.
Encourage restaurants to have heart-healthy choices and to have vegetarian choices. It seems marketing health food is working (i.e. Subway), so we imagine more restaurants — from big chains to small favorites — would want healthier menus.
Get involved. An online Tribune reader complained that the same people are on all the panels, committees and task forces. The comment really showed how there are a lot of uninvolved, anti-social folks, such as that reader. Long-lived people are social and involved. Make a difference. (Here’s a cause for starters: Push city and state leaders to put more directional signs around here. People get lost too easily.)
Get outside. Albert Lea is blessed with parks. Go to them. Take your children if you have them. Play. Explore. Picnic.
