Freeborn County burning ban lifted

Officials with the Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office and the Freeborn County Emergency Management Department lifted the burning ban for the county Monday morning.
According to a news release, recreational burning will be permitted for people with campfires or recreational fires no more than 3-feet in diameter and 18 inches high.
Controlled burning will also be allowed to people who have obtained a burning permit through Freeborn County Environmental Services. Burning permits are free.
Anyone beginning a controlled burn with a current permit is required to call the Freeborn County Law Enforcement Center at 377-5205 to advise dispatchers that the burn is being initiated, the release stated. People with burning permits must be on site and control the burn as it is occurring.
The initial burning ban was put into place last week because of dry conditions and strong winds, Freeborn County Sheriff Mark Harig said at the time. A handful of controlled burn fires had gotten out of hand in a few cities across the county.
Over the weekend the region received some moisture to help alleviate the conditions.
Harig said the departments will continue to monitor weather and wind conditions. If conditions get too dry, they will determine whether burning needs to be restricted again.
According to the National Weather Service, Tuesday will be mostly sunny and breezy. Temperatures are expected to reach the mid-70s Thursday and Friday. There is a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms on Friday night.
