Mitchell “Mic” Skaar, 15, of Hayward, has earned the highest advancement award the Boy Scouts of America offers to Scouts, The Eagle Award.
Skaar will be recognized in ceremonies at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Fairlane Community Building on the Freeborn County Fairgrounds.
A member of Halverson Troop 7, Skaar is one of approximately 2 percent of all Boy Scouts who attain the Eagle rank, according to Scoutmaster Doug Lind
Each candidate must earn 21 merit badges and successfully complete a community, church or school-related project to earn his Eagle. Skaar chose to build 21 of the new benches used by the fair board during the grandstand activities at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds each summer. If you have sat on a new long bench and watched a grandstand show, you have sat on a bench that was part of Skaar’s Eagle project
He has served as patrol leader, scribe, assistant senior patrol leader and patrol leader for Troop 7. Skaar also served as the assistant crew chief on the troop’s recent backpacking trip to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. He will serve as the crew leader for the backpacking trip through the Black Hills in South Dakota this coming summer.
Skaar attends Albert Lea High School where he is active in FFA. He is a member of Hayward Lutheran Church. He helps to work the family farm in Hayward.
He is the son of Sue and Tracy Skaar of rural Hayward. He has one sister, Shaina, and one brother, Jay.
