Timely hits lead Knights to win

The opportunities were few for both Alden-Conger and Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton Monday night in Alden, but the Knights were able to make the most of their opportunities even in unlikely situations.

Alden-Conger scored three runs with two outs en route to a 5-3 win over the Bulldogs for its first win of the season.

Spencer Niebuhr came through with a pair of clutch hits to put the Knights on top. In the third inning Niebuhr came to the plate with David Troska in scoring position. The two previous hitters both struck out, but Niebuhr was able to line a pitch up the middle to score Troska and put Alden-Conger up 1-0.

J-W-P came back to tie the game in the top of the fifth, but Niebuhr was there again to lift his team. With two outs and Troska on second base, Niebuhr drove a pitch deep to the outfield to score Troska and regain the lead 2-1.

“I’m glad the big man came through tonight,” said Knights head coach Faron Bremseth.

Niebuhr’s second RBI of the game was big, considering the previous two hitters had just struck out and it kept the inning alive. Niebuhr eventually came around to score on a wild pitch and Alden-Conger took a 3-1 lead.

The Bulldogs got back to within one run after the top of the sixth, but the Knights scored two runs in the bottom half of the sixth for a 5-2 lead and held on for the 5-3 win.

“The way it was going, you can get your opportunities, you ain’t going to get many,” Bremseth said. “But we did tonight.”

Alden-Conger starter Matt Jensen pitched six strong innings, allowing just two runs on four hits while striking out seven and walking two.

“Very good pitching tonight,” Bremseth said. “That’s what I know we’ve got.”

Jensen was sharp early on. He didn’t allow a hit until the fifth inning.

Jensen got out of a jam in the sixth inning when second baseman Cam Majerus started a 4-6-3 double play that eliminated a leadoff walk. It was an important play because the next hitter blasted a pitch to left field for a double and Alex Eustice hit an RBI single.

Lucas Kleinschrodt came on in relief and allowed just one run and struck out the side.

Although Alden-Conger cashed in on its opportunities, Bremseth knows the hitting has to improve yet.

“Hitting has got to come around,” Bremseth said. “We can’t just wait for one guy to do all the hitting for us. Everybody’s got to pick up the sticks.”

The Knights face Glenville-Emmons Friday in Glenville.
