Walk through solar system this weekend
Published 9:16 am Thursday, April 30, 2009
The 10th annual Walk Through the Solar System will be held from 8 to 10 p.m. Saturday in Hollandale. The free event is a true-to-scale model of the solar system to the planet Pluto.
Each participant receives a passport to collect unique travel stamps at the nine traditional planets. The walk shows the planets’ diameters and separations at the same scale, something no textbook, computer monitor or poster can do. Participants are greeted at each planet by a volunteer who tells them about that unique world and how far it is to the next planet.
The walk takes the average person 30 minutes to complete, so people should arrive no later than 9:30 p.m. to complete the walk. Anyone capable of traveling 1.1 miles from the 15-inch sun to tiny Pluto and back again is welcome to attend.
In the event of rain, the event will be canceled.
Parking is free in the AgPower John Deere parking lot. People should bring flashlights, jackets, hats, gloves and wear shoes appropriate for walking 2 miles on a gravel road.
The nearest public restroom is at the BP gas station at the Gopher Stop on Interstate 35.
