The Albert Lea boys’ golf team had an opportunity to shake up the conference Tuesday when the Tigers traveled to Mankato to face Mankato West and Owatonna at the Mankato Country Club, but wasn’t able to catch the Scarlets at their home course.

Albert Lea shot 328 to finish 10 strokes behind West which shot 318. Owatonna took third with a 341.

Despite the loss the Tigers still achieved their best conference record during head coach Riley Worth’s tenure with a 6-3 mark.

“We’ve never had a winning regular season record in my three years,” Worth said. “We would have liked to get it to 7-2, but we’re really proud with 6-3.”

After sitting out Monday’s meet with Blue Earth to concentrate on his putting Tyler Brackey responded with a team-low 77 and carded 28 putts on his round.

Sam Matheson followed with an 82, Casey Marka an 84 and Tyler Haaland an 85.

Jonny Brennan led the Scarlets with a 75 while another player shot 77 and two shot 83.

Albert Lea now turns its attention to the Big Nine Conference meet which begins May 18 at the Winona Bridges Golf Club. Last season the Tigers came out of nowhere to finish second at the tournament and fourth overall in the conference.
