Evelyn Mittag, 83, of Austin, passed away on May 3, 2009, at Austin Medical Center following her battle with cancer.
She was surrounded by her loving family.
Evelyn was born June 16, 1925, to Harold and Myletta (Fetterly) Yaste in Austin. She graduated from Austin High School in 1943. On Dec. 28, 1943, she married Wilbur Mittag at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Myrtle. They started their lives together on a farm near Myrtle, where their first son was born. After seven years, they bought a farm near Lyle, where they lived for 22 years and where their daughter and a second son were born. Austin, where they lived for 35 years, was where they called home until her death.
A member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Austin. Evelyn was an expert seamstress, sewing the majority of her and her daughter’s clothes. She also enjoyed caring for her family, cross-stitching, and solving word puzzles.
Survivors include her husband, Wilbur; daughter, Becky (Ronnie) Pitzen, Stacyville, Iowa; sons: Bob (Cindy) Mittag, Beavercreek, Ohio, and Rod (Sarah) Mittag, San Francisco, Calif.; grandchildren: Jenny (Dan) Wilcox, Brian Pitzen, Mike (Katie) Pitzen, Laura (Brandon) Smith, Kevin (Mandy) Pitzen and Eric Pitzen; great-grandsons: Larson Wilcox, Corbin Wilcox, Jackson Pitzen, and Dylan Pitzen; sisters: Clarice Martell and Beverly Will; brother, Burton (Marsha) Yaste.
Preceding her in death were her parents.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Austin at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dan Kahl Officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Austin. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary and for one hour before the service at the church on Thursday.
