A man was arrested Wednesday night following a high speed chase after he stole an Austin Police Department squad car.

The incident began when Mower County deputies responded to a call of a domestic disturbance at 57886 105th St. in Lyle. According to Austin Police reports, the man, 27, allegedly threatened a family member by brandishing a knife and then fled on a bicycle.

Deputies set up a perimeter and called Austin Police for the canine unit for a track. The track included an area of roughly 1 3/4 mile starting at around 10484 565th Ave.

About 35 minutes into the track an unfamiliar voice came over the police radio asking what their intentions were should the subject be apprehended. It was then figured out that the call came from the canine unit and a Global Position System signal from the car showed it to be in motion — southbound on 565th Avenue.

Mower County deputies located the vehicle, but the man failed to stop and instead accelerated. Speeds during the chase reached 120 mph.

The chase eventually reached U.S. Highway 218 into Iowa. The Iowa Highway Patrol set up stop sticks outside of St. Ansgar, Iowa. The man, however, jammed on the breaks and came to stop in the driving lane.

A deputy tried to avoid the car, but ended up striking it, causing small damage to both automobiles. The man then reversed course and began northbound on Highway 218. The man got into Lyle where he turned west onto County Road 6, then south on Minnesota Highway 105 and east again on State Line Road, eventually crossing the border again, taking Worth County Road S70 in Iowa.

The man then called Austin dispatch and arranged to turn himself in at the Northwood Fire Department, where Mower County deputies took him into custody and handed him over to Northwood police.

Austin police officers are investigating how the man managed to get into the canine car.

He has yet to be charged but could face charges such as second-degree assault, motor-vehicle theft, felony flee in a motor vehicle and theft of firearm due to the firearms in the squad car at the time of the theft.

Iowa authorities are also looking into charges. The man is currently in the Worth County Jail.

Freeborn County authorities were ready for the driver in case the pursuit entered the London area but he never crossed into Freeborn County.
