Lake Mills pitcher hurls no-hitter

There was no celebration following the completion of Lake Mills pitcher Josie Brackey’s no-hitter Tuesday against Hampton-Dumont in Lake Mills, but there might of been a few sighs of relief.
Not that Brackey was in trouble in her seven innings of perfection but because the Bulldogs got just enough offense in a 1-0 win.
Brackey threw seven innings of no-hit ball and walked just four in her first victory of the season. She allowed just two runners to advance into scoring position and struck out seven.
“My rises were working pretty good,” Brackey said. “They were swinging under it so that was pretty good.”
Brackey also helped her own cause as she drove in the game-winning run in the third inning on a single that scored Lindy Pins.
After a 9-0 season-opening loss to North Sentral Kossuth Monday, Lake Mills felt fortunate just to get a win after tallying just one hit the night before.
“You know at the beginning of the season it’s always rough coming in especially this year we’ve had a lot of school events going on,” said Bulldogs head coach Stacie Gaskill. “So it’s been hard to get everyone in practicing and getting through everything we need to get through so that was the one thing that we lacked was that we didn’t get as much hitting in as we have in the past. We’re slowly improving, our confidence is slowly getting there.”
Lake Mills had just three hits in the game Tuesday, but that was all it needed as Brackey completed the no-hitter.
Gaskill said there’s definitely room to improve yet, but the Bulldogs seem to be on the right track with Brackey tossing a no-no in the second game of the season.
“We still have lots of room to improve, especially offensively,” Gaskill said. “I’d rather have it at the beginning of the season than the end.”
Lake Mills faces Central Springs Thursday in Lake Mills.
