Authorities suspect alcohol may have been involved in last weekend’s crash between a car and a motorcycle, said Freeborn County Sheriff Mark Harig on Friday. They are waiting for lab results and an autopsy report before charges can be filed.
The motorcyclist died.
Harig said county deputies sent the blood-alcohol test for 86-year-old Marvin William Steinhauer of Albert Lea — the driver of the 2003 Buick LeSabre who reportedly failed to stop for a stop sign on Freeborn County Road 46 and was struck broadside by a motorcyclist — to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. They are waiting to hear back.
County officials are also waiting to get back the autopsy reports of the motorcyclist who died, Jose Ignacio Martinez-Navidad, 48, of Blue Earth.
Harig said he did not know when those results would be returned.
According to officials, the crash took place at about 6:20 p.m. Friday, May 29. Steinhauer was traveling north on 700th Avenue, when he reportedly failed to stop for a stop sign and was struck broadside by Martinez-Navidad’s 1981 Honda motorcycle that was traveling west on County Road 46.
Martinez-Navidad received severe injuries in the crash and was transported by ambulance to Albert Lea Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Steinhauer was not injured and was taken into custody.
