Bulldogs make it seven straight

It’s become pretty clear that the Lake Mills baseball team doesn’t mind trailing early in the game, but it’s also become evident that the Bulldogs are quickly becoming a dangerous team.
Lake Mills (10-5, 4-1 NIC) won its seventh straight game Thursday with a 13-2 victory against Woden-Crystal Lake-Titonka in Lake Mills as the Bulldogs came from behind in their fifth game this season.
The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning when Adam Bengsten scored on a wild pitch and Brandon Thilges scored on an error, but that’s all WCLT would get against starter Levi Dahle.
Dahle threw six innings of two-hit ball and stuck out eight to pick up the win on the mound.
Lake Mills tied the game in the second when Dahle led off with a double and scored on an error. Wade Hebrink scored on an RBI single from Scott Abbey to tie the game.
Just nine days ago Lake Mills was 3-5 and had scored one run in its last two games. Since that time the Bulldogs haven’t loss and have averaged just under 10 runs a game in their past seven games.
During the seven-game win streak the Bulldogs have hit 15 doubles and 10 home runs, including at least one homer in the past seven.
The contributions have come throughout the lineup and Thursday night it was Hebrink, the senior shortstop, leading the way. Hebrink went 4-for-4 with a double and three RBIs as his offense has come on during the stretch.
“He’s one that we really need to carry us through if we want to continue to battle for the conference title and get far in district play,” said Lake Mills head coach Jason Blaser. “Being a five-year starter now, he’s really starting now to relax and do some great things.”
Hebrink’s two-run double helped lead to a seven-run third where 12 batters went to the plate. Royce Byrnes later hit a bases-loaded double to add to the lead.
As the season has progressed the team has relaxed more and hasn’t put any pressure on themselves regardless of the current streak.
“We don’t think much about that (the streak),” Hebrink said. “We just basically come out and play, have fun.”
Lake Mills is having plenty of fun these days and even sophomore pinch-hitter Curtis Fell got into the act. In just his second varsity at-bat Fell homered to center field in the sixth inning for a three-run shot to end the game.
“I just saw it coming and it was there,” Fell said. “Coach told me if it’s there, take it.”
The Bulldogs will try to run their streak to eight games Friday when they host Osage in a North Iowa Conference contest.
