Curtailing Elks staff was necessary

Recently, there has been considerable speculation concerning the financial condition of the Albert Lea Elks. Rumors abound as to whether the lodge will remain open. It is counterproductive at this point to ask why or how we got where we are. Rather, we need to focus on how to turn the numbers around.

We are exploring several options including the sale of the building. However, we will do everything in our power to see that the Elks continue in Albert Lea. To be frank, there are significant challenges ahead for us all.

Due to deteriorating results, it was necessary to severely curtail the kitchen operation. This was not a decision that was made lightly. For some time, food and labor costs have dramatically exceeded sales receipts and it was impossible to continue on this basis. Unfortunately, as a result, some people lost their jobs. We sincerely regret this outcome, but there was no other option that made sense.

There will still be food available on a limited basis. A cook will be on duty for taco night, bingo burger baskets, service club lunches and special events. All members are invited to participate including lunch when service clubs are meeting separately in the building.

Grand Lodge Steering Committee members Randy Smith, Robert Stein and I appreciate your understanding during these tough times and encourage all Elks to patronize your lodge club as often as possible. Also, if you really want to help, volunteer your services.
