It really is shaping up to be a spectacular Independence Day weekend in Albert Lea.

Here is why:

The Third of July is on a Friday — the day of the annual Third of July Parade in Albert Lea. The Fourth of July is on Saturday. The calendar alone means the attendance of Independence Day activities is going to be higher than usual.

The Third of July Parade’s organizing committee has selected a great theme this year, via an online poll: “Heart of America.” We are looking forward to seeing the parade entries.

The Albert Lea-Freeborn County Chamber of Commerce and KATE Radio raised $16,000 for the July 4 fireworks display, more than the goal of $15,000. This means there will be a great show once again visible from the shores of Fountain Lake.

There is a new addition to the local festivities — Merriam’s Midway Carnival. People can enjoy rides in the North Broadway Avenue Parking lot starting July 3 and ending July 5.

Let’s not forget the afternoon show by the Bayside Skiers on July 4 and a concert of gospel music at Fountain Lake Park on July 5.

Clear your schedule and mark Albert Lea as your destination that weekend. It’s going to be a good one.
