Glenville Days 2009 will blend the old with the new.

Events will kick off with a scholarship supper from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and will continue through Sunday.

“We tried to bring back some of the old activities that we kind of did away with a few years ago,” said Emmy Stilley, chairwoman of Glenville Days.

Some of these events were discontinued a few years ago because of lack of community involvement, but Stilley said people have stepped up to help with activities. Clubs like the football boosters and student council will hold events or work with things like concessions as part of a fundraiser. The ring toss and face painting will also serve as fundraisers.

“I think in the last month I’ve had more people come and volunteer their time and talents and try to make it a success. I think that’s great. We’re trying to build it bigger and better each year,” Stilley said.

One special event this year includes the Glenville Fire Department’s plans to celebrate its 100th birthday.

All current and retired fire department members are being asked to serve as grand marshals of the Glenville Days parade at 10 a.m. Saturday. A float is being prepared for them to ride on. Department members are asked to meet at the high school in Glenville at 9:30 a.m.

Following the parade, the Little King and Queen contest will be held at 11 a.m. at the tennis court. Contestants are Madison Berry, daughter of Jessica and Jon Berry; Damon Ellingson, son of Kelly and Bridget Ellingson; Holden Fredrickson, son of Kristyn Fredrickson and Jay Mahar; Lauren Heskett, daughter of Earl and Nancy Heskett; Rachel Heskett, daughter of Earl and Nancy Heskett; Tannon Hornberger, son of John and Mindy Hornberger; Cole Knutson, son of Eric and Carla Knutson; Kendra Knutson, son of Jeremy and Ann Knutson; Judd Moller, son of Matt and Angela Moller; Kole Nelsen, son of Kevin and Misty Nelsen; and Katelyn Oudekerk, daughter of Troy and Tammy Oudekerk.

After that, at about noon, a special ceremony, titled “The Last Call,” will be held to honor all deceased firemen. Officials hope to gather all the names of the firemen who’ve served in Glenville and put them on a “Wall of Flame.”

One new event will be “Glenville’s Got Talent,” which will be a judged talent show at the park gazebo at 8 p.m. Friday. The show will include singing, dancing and comedy, and winners will receive prizes. Currently, about 10 people plan to compete, and Stilley said she wants to keep the competition to under an hour.

After that, there will be a DJ and a street dance on Main Street beginning at about 9:30 p.m.

Other events will take place in the park Saturday. A 50-foot train pulled by a lawn tractor will give children rides around the perimeter of the park. Most of the rides will cost between 50 cents and $1, Stilley said. A dodgeball tournament will be held in the park at 2 p.m.

From 1:30 to 5 p.m., bingo will be played in the park, and bovine bingo, which Stilley said has been a popular event in the past, will be at 3 p.m.

Food vendors in the park will set up in the park to sell things like walking tacos, mini doughnuts and pork sandwiches.

The car cruise from Eddie Cochran Days will drive around the park about 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

Saturday night will end with Arch Allies performing at 8:30 p.m. The cover band from Chaska will play REO Speedwagon, Journey and Styx music, and Stilley said she hopes the performance attracts people from out of town.

The final events will be held Sunday morning with a softball tournament at 8 a.m., a church service in the park at 9 a.m. and the Cub Scout pancake breakfast in the park at 10 a.m.

“I hope it kicks off the summer for them in an enjoyable time and memorable weekend for the whole family, for the kids all the way up to the grandparents,” Stilley said.
