The east course has been a breeze for Albert Lea senior Kelli Hanson at the Class 3A girls’ golf state tournament, but the west course has been like a tornado.
Hanson shot 87, after she shot 89 the first day, and once again struggled on the west side of the course.
Hanson finished tied for 29th overall with a two-day total of 176, but the east course and the west course were like night and day. Her two-day total on the east course was 79, on the west course it was 97.
“I just think I’ve never really played it well,” Hanson said of the west course. “I don’t have a good perspective on what to.”
Hanson had a good start on the east course, one-putting for pars on the first three holes as she shot a 40 on the east course.
Hanson improved 25 spots after placing 54th overall last year.
“It was just a really good way to end the year,” Hanson said. “When I was younger I never really thought that I’d be able to get here.”
Albert Lea girls’ golf head coach Shawn Riebe said the past two years of watching Hanson at state has been a good experience.
“It’s really neat to get her up there two years and watch the progression,” Riebe said. “Hopefully we continue to send people up there.”
Hanson considered the trip to state a success because she wasn’t focusing on placing.
“I think it’s a success no matter what I shot,” Hanson said. “I just wanted to shoot lower than last year. I just wanted to have fun and not worry about it.”
