Vietnam vets and Vietnam-era veterans from around the region are invited to attend Vietnam Veterans Recognition Day on Sunday afternoon, June 14, for a free picnic social. The fifth annual barbecue picnic, sponsored by the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 790, will be held this year at Swensrud Park in Northwood, Iowa. Located along the riverfront, there is close parking, lots of shade trees. There will be a variety of foods, but mainly the day focuses on the camaraderie among fellow Vietnam veterans. June 14 is also known and celebrated as Flag Day.
There will be grilled burgers, brats, hot dogs, beans and lemonade furnished. Those attending are asked to bring salads, sides, or desserts to share. Serving will begin at 1 p.m. Family members or guests are welcome, too. Flags and military hats will also be available.
Jerry Parmley, V.V.A. chapter president, said that while this picnic is honoring Vietnam-era veterans, the local chapter also hosts the “All-Veterans, All-Eras” barbecue picnic set for Aug. 22, which honors veterans from all branches of the military who served in various eras such as World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Afganistan and Iraq. This eighth annual picnic was formerly held in Lake Mills but is now being moved to Northwood’s Swensrud Park for more parking access as the event continues to grow larger every year. The All Veterans-All Eras picnic also features local patriotic singers and door prizes.
