The Lake Mills baseball team went from a 2-0 lead to suddenly a 7-3 deficit in the span of an inning and a half Monday against Garner-Hayfield in Lake Mills, but managed to mount a late rally to win 8-7 in eight innings.
Still trailing 7-5 heading into the bottom of the seventh freshman Bryan Hengesteg delivered a bloop single over the head of Garner-Hayfield’s shortstop that allowed Tyler Rice and Levi Dahle to score to tie the game.
From there the Bulldogs (8-5, 3-1 NIC) took advantage of a Garner-Hayfield error in the eighth to win the game and their fifth straight.
“The kids showed a lot of character to come back from a 5-2 deficit,” Lake Mills head coach Jason Blaser said. “We found a way to get it done.”
Brad Midlang added a two-run homer and Alex Grunhovd hit a solo shot in the second for the Bulldogs.
Garner-Hayfield hit a three-run homer and a solo homer in the third as Cardinals took a 5-2 lead after the top of the third.
But Lake Mills chipped away with a run in the bottom half and two in the fourth before tying the game in the seventh.
