On May 14, Darrel Amundson was awarded the Service to Mankind Award for 2008-2009 by the Albert Lea Sertoma Club.
Amundson has demonstrated his commitment to Albert Lea and Freeborn County for numerous years. A large amount of his energy is exerted in serving mankind. Even through medical difficulties Amundson continued to make the community a better place to live.
“This person is a true example of the meaning of commitment and volunteerism,” said Albert Lea Sertoma Club President, Pete Phelps.
Although he is placed in the public eye through KATE radio, he always promotes the community in business, safety and activities.
“It’s like most volunteers you don’t have time, but you make time for the things that matter,” said Amundson. “I’m a hometown boy, and I like to help out.”
Amundson has also worked for the past 10 years on the Eagles Cans for Cancer fundraising event. In addition, he has been the master of ceremonies of the Eagle Cancer Cablethon for over 25 years. He has also fundraised for Fourth of July fireworks, informed the community of changing weather patterns, and putting long days in at the Freeborn County Fair each year. Some other charities he has worked for are the Senior Center, United Way, Family Y and recently the Humane Society of Freeborn County.
“It goes without saying his enthusiasm is shown by the hours he spends in promoting various businesses in our community whether it be a grand opening or a special promotion for a business,” said Phelps.
Amundson once worked with training young people about the business world through the Junior Achievement program. He entertains the area with his music in the park as well as playing at dances, and allows the general public to talk and vent on almost any topic concerning our county, city or state.
“I was flabbergasted when I found out, but it was a nice feeling,” said Amundson. “I don’t go looking to volunteer, it comes looking for me.”
