For the past few decades the Fountain Lake Sportsman’s Club in Albert Lea has worked to introduce children to fishing through its Take a Kid Fishing Day.
This year Take a Kid Fishing Day in Albert Lea is scheduled for June 6.
The event happens this year at the Edgewater Park fishing pier from 9 a.m. to noon and is once again organized by the Fountain Lake Sportsman’s Club.
“Folks from all over southern Minnesota come to Albert Lea,” said Larry Anderson, vice president of the Fountain Lake Sportsman’s Club. “And we have had people from as far away as England wet a line and enjoy themselves on this day.”
Partnering again this year is the Make-a-Wish Foundation.
“We had the Make-a-Wish people with us last year,” Anderson said. “And it went so well that we invited them back again this year.”
Anderson said that the Sportsman’s Club has been involved now with the annual event for almost 30 years.
“I am very passionate about the Albert Lea area,” Anderson said. “And what it has to offer people of all ages. The Take a Kid Fishing Day is one of many things that I love to see each year.”
Prizes will be given out to the boys and girls. An award goes to the three largest fish caught and participants may buy raffle tickets at the event for the chance of winning other prizes.
It is strictly a catch-and-release contest, and bait will be provided.
Events like Take a Kid Fishing Day are held all over Minnesota in an effort by local sportsmen and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. It is a free-fishing day; no licenses needed.
