Weekend Planner: Festivals, carnival, Eddie Cochran Days are all ahead

The Children’s Center will host its annual family carnival on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at its main site, 605 James Ave.
Food will be served starting at 6 p.m. while the games and other activities will start at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is invited. The cost is $5 per arm band for unlimited games and activities. Food will be at an additional cost. There will also be a silent auction and bake sale.
All proceeds go to the United Way sliding fee scale and other program expenses.

Friday, June 12
The Bonnie Broitzman, Steve Tubbs, Chris Charlson and Dustin DeBoer exhibits will be open at the Albert Lea Art Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
First Lutheran Church Women of Albert Lea will host a salad luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Bethany Hall. The program will be the history of First Lutheran Church by Roger Lonning. Music will be provided by Sue Jorgensen. Tickets are $6 per person and may be purchased in the church office, at Doyle’s Hallmark and at the door. Proceeds will go to the stained glass window fund.
The Glenville-Emmons Foundation will hold a pork loin meal fundraiser from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Glenville American Legion Club. Pork loin, baked potato, baked beans, bread and bars will be served. Suggested donation is $8 per person. Proceeds go toward scholarships for Glenville-Emmons High School graduates.
The Pelican Breeze will hold a pizza cruise from 6 to 7:30 pm. Reservations are needed by 4 p.m.; call 383-2630.
Bar Games in Northwood, Iowa, will host the bands Forever Dumb, The Style Biters and Kidnap the Son starting at 9 p.m.
Saturday, June 13
Freeborn Day events will be held in Freeborn starting with a pancake breakfast from 7 to 10 a.m. in the American Legion Hall. Citywide rummage sales run from 8 a.m. to noon. There will be a craft show in the country schoolhouse from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A kids’ parade takes place in front of the bank from noon to 12:30 p.m. Kids’ activities (for a $5 charge) take place across from the bank from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. From 4 to 5 p.m., there will be a kids’ pedal pull. A pork chop supper by the firefighters and ambulance squad runs from 5 to 7 p.m. R & R Wrestling takes place under the big top (admission $5) from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Fireworks at dusk behind the schoolhouse bring the day to a close.
The Albert Lea Art Center will hold its “unique junque sale” in conjunction with the Eddie Cochran Weekend citywide garage sales from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1206 W. Richway Drive.
The Albert Lea Farmers Market will be open in the North Broadway Avenue parking lot from 9 a.m. to noon.
The Freeborn County Historical Museum will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Root beer floats will be available for purchase from 1 to 4 p.m. near the church gate.
The Pelican Breeze will hold a public cruise from 4 to 5:30 p.m. No reservations are needed.

Sunday, June 14
The Good Samaritan Society of Albert Lea will hold a flag-retirement ceremony at 1 p.m. and a 21-gun salute at 1:30 p.m. There will also be a silent auction and bake sale. Musical entertainment will be provided by Dunnell Lenort. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Proceeds will go toward a new flat-screen television for residents.
The Pelican Breeze will hold a public cruise with entertainment by guitarist David Courey from 1:30 to 3 p.m. No reservations are needed.
The Full House Band will provide a free concert in the Edgewater Park bandshell at 1:30 p.m. The Full House Band plays country music, old-time waltzes and polkas and other pop tunes. The band includes Kevin Walton, Terri Jo Walton, Renae Herr and Jim Berg.
