Weekend Planner: triathlon, fishing slated for kids

There’s a lot going on this weekend if you’re a kid.

The first Land Between the Lakes Kids Triathlon will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday. It will begin at the City Pool and will consist of a swim, bike ride and run with varying distances based on the child’s age.

Distances will range from a swim of one length of the pool for 7- and 8-year-olds to four lengths for 13- to 14-year-olds. The bike portion will range from 1 mile for 7- and 8-year-olds to 4 miles for 13-and 14-year-olds. The run ranges from one-quarter mile for 7- and 8-year-olds to 1 mile for 13- and 14-year-olds.

There is an entry fee of $10 per person and $30 for each team. Each participant must have a signed registration form and wear a bike helmet.

Children will need to bring a swimsuit, goggles or mask for the swim, a bike with a helmet and socks and shoes for the run.

Check-in will begin at 7:30 a.m. and a pre-race meeting will be held at 8:45 a.m.

Also on Saturday, the Fountain Lake Sportsmen’s Club will hold its annual Take a Kid Fishing Day from 9 a.m. to noon at the Edgewater Park fishing pier.

There will be first-, second- and third-place prizes for boys and girls. Bait will be furnished. All fish that are caught will be released.

Friday, June 5

The Bonnie Broitzman, Steve Tubbs, Chris Charlson and Dustin DeBoer exhibits will be open at the Albert Lea Art Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Saturday, June 6

The Albert Lea Farmers Market will be open in the North Broadway Avenue parking lot from 9 a.m. to noon.

The Bonnie Broitzman, Steve Tubbs, Chris Charlson and Dustin DeBoer exhibits will be open at the Albert Lea Art Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Gone Fishin’, a Southern gospel group, will perform at the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m.

Stephanie Erdman and her Legends Band will perform at the Historic Paramount Theatre in Austin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Paramount at (507) 434-0934 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Cost is $13 in advance or $15 at the door. They are also available online at paramounttheatre.org. Erdman will be singing (in costume) the most famous songs of Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Dottie West and Patsy Cline. The Legends Band includes Barb Lang on keyboard and vocals; Neil Lang on pedal steel; Jack Beighley on guitar and vocals; and Merle Kraus on drums. Karen Szymanowski will serve as the master of ceremonies for the concert.

Sunday, June 7

The Albert Lea Cloverleaf and Lakeview Lions will hold their annual flight breakfast from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Albert Lea Airport. Cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children 12 and younger.
