Wrestling coming to Freeborn Days

Freeborn Days this year will only be one day on Saturday, June 13, but there will be new events.
Instead of a street dance, there will be an R&R Wrestling Event from 7 to 9:30 p.m. in a 40-by-40-foot tent in Central Park. The tent can hold about 200 people, and admission is $5. Former American Wrestling Association wrester Rock n Roll Buck ZumHofe will face All Star Paul Brewski.
R&R Wrestling held an event at the TB3’s Bar and Grill a few months ago, the event attracted a much larger crowd than expected, said Theo Beckmann, booster’s club president and co-owner of TB3’s Bar and Grill,
“We wanted to try to have something that would appeal to a wider range of individuals …” Mayor Mark Gruben said. “We’re trying to make this a much more family friendly event.”
The boosters, who organize Freeborn Days, liked the idea because rain and weather won’t play as big a role as would with a street dance, Beckmann said. The last wrestling match will likely be a match in a pool, he added.
Beckmann said Freeborn Days will only be a one day because the boosters are trying something different, but he hopes it will become a three day event in years to come.
Beckmann said the fireworks show at 10 p.m. is very good for a town the size of Freeborn.
Gruben said many people from Freeborn were able to watch the fireworks from their homes last year.
A number of other events will be held before the R&R Wrestling and the fireworks. There will be a breakfast at the Freeborn American Legion from 7 to 11 a.m. Then there will be townwide garage sales from 8 a.m. to noon.
For the first time this year, the Northwood-Kensett FFA and the Freeborn American Legion will sponsor the Kids’ Pedal Pull on Park Street at 4 p.m.
“We have quite a few folks that do come from out of town because they have family in Freeborn or they grew up in Freeborn or they have friends in Freeborn, which is great because we’re always trying to put out the welcome mat out,” Gruben said.
The Freeborn Fire/Ambulance will hold a pork chop supper from 5 to 7 p.m. The 4-H Club will have food stand on Park Street from noon to 8 p.m., and there will be a beverage garden.
