Albert Lea power not enough in loss

The Albert Lea Colonels displayed some power Wednesday night against the Mankato Mets at Hayek Field, but that power couldn’t make up for three fielding miscues that cost the Colonels.

Albert Lea (3-14) hit two home runs, including a three-run homer from Logan Kortan and a two-run homer from Casey Woodside, but three errors in the sixth inning led to three unearned runs and a 9-7 loss for the Colonels.

“We had three errors that inning and that just killed us,” said Albert Lea manager Bill Trygstad. “We should have been out of that inning. I guess we gotta learn to make the plays when they have to make them.”

The Colonels entered the sixth with a 7-6 lead.

Woodside hit his blast in the first inning with one out and Devin Kaasa on first. In the third inning with one run already in, and two men on, Kortan hit his three-run homer to give Albert Lea a 6-5 lead.

The two teams traded runs in the fourth and fifth, but the Mets came through with three in the sixth.

Albert Lea had a chance to get back in the game, but with the bases loaded grounded into a double play to end the inning and was only able to score one run.

The Colonels had a chance in the eighth with two men on and one out, but Mankato was able to retire the next two hitters to end the threat.

Albert Lea outhit the Mets (14-5) 14 to 13, but fielding miscues were the difference.

Mankato’s Jake Krier went 2-for-6 in the game with two home runs. Krier hit a two-run homer in the first and a solo shot in the fourth.

“We did play better and that’s encouraging,” Trygstad said. “Hopefully we can continue that into the playoffs next Friday.”
