Bulldog softball season ends

Each time Lake Mills found an opportunity to put runs on the board, MFL-Mar-Mac starter Riley Schiller found a way to keep the Bulldogs down.

In the fourth and fifth innings the Lake Mills (20-11) softball team had two runners on and one out, but each time Schiller struck out the next two hitters she faced.

Schiller threw a five-hit shutout as MFL-Mar-Mac advanced to the regional championship with a 1-0 win over the Bulldogs in Charles City, Iowa, to end the season for Lake Mills.

MFL-Mar-Mac pushed the only run of the game across in the fifth inning when Courtney Hefner reached on a dropped third strike. One batter later Erin Scherf followed with a double to score Hefner.

MFL-Mar-Mac had just four hits against Lake Mills starter Josie Brackey. Brackey struck out nine and did not walk a hitter in seven innings of work.

Schiller allowed five hits and struck out 10 while walking one in the victory.

“She had an amazing drop ball and that’s what we kept swinging at,” said Bulldogs head coach Stacie Gaskill.

It was the second straight season Lake Mills lost in the regional semifinals and this time the little things added up.

“We got away with stuff all year and it finally caught up with us,” Gaskill said. “Once you get to this round you nearly have to be perfect.”
