Doubleheader shows two sides of Post 56

Just about everything went right for the Albert Lea American Legion baseball team Thursday night in its first game of a doubleheader with Rochester, but Post 56 did a complete 180 in the second game as it split the two-game tilt at Hayek Field.

Albert Lea starter Jordan Cooper delivered his second consecutive complete-game two-hitter as Post 56 (6-7) picked up a 10-0, five inning win against the Eagles.

Cooper was dominant through five innings, allowing just a harmless two-out single in the first and in the fifth as he cruised to his second straight win on the mound.

“He was in control,” said Albert Lea head coach Jack Kortan. “He didn’t give them much of a snip at all.”

Cooper also came through at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Leadoff hitter Jordan Mondeel was disruptive during the first game with a four-hit performance. Mondeel reached in all four of his plate appearances and scored three runs to give the Post 56 offense a jolt it had lacked in its last three games.

Albert Lea pushed five runs across in the first inning on five hits. Logan Kortan came through with a two-run single to center to score Mondeel and Cooper. Luke Grossman followed with an RBI single to score Casey Woodside and Kortan later scored on a double steal to push the early lead to 4-0. J.T. Bellrichard drove in Grossman with a ground out as Post 56 batted nine in the inning.

In the fourth Albert Lea got rolling again with Mondeel starting the inning with a triple. Cooper followed with an RBI single and Kortan later hit an RBI double.

All of the good that Albert Lea did in the first game was nowhere to be found in the second game as Post 56 was handed a 7-2 loss where the team committed nine errors in the field and tallied just three hits.

The Eagles got on the board in the third inning after Albert Lea committed four errors in the field.

Rochester picked up where it left off in the fifth when a lead off walk to No. 8 hitter Mark Greve turned into a two-run inning where Post 56 committed two more errors. Nick Schoeberl hit an RBI single to score Greve and Chris Griffin knocked in Schoeberl with an RBI single to make the game 4-0.

Cole Sorenson worked out of a bases loaded jam later in the inning by striking out Eric Bieniek on a called third strike, but that was the end of Sorenson’s night.

Sorenson threw just four innings and gave up four runs, one earned, on two hits. He struck out four, but also walked four in his first American Legion start.

Post 56 only found three hits against Eagles’ starter Ricky Devorak, but left seven runners on base.

Devorak escaped a jam in the fifth inning. Albert Lea had runners on first and third with two away when Casey Woodside hit a line drive to left field. Rochester left fielder Schoeberl broke for the ball and made a spectacular diving catch to end the inning.

Post 56 will get a chance to rebound Sunday at Hayek Field against Owatonna in a doubleheader as the two teams will meet for the first time since Owatonna swept Albert Lea in a heated playoffs series in Owatonna during the high school season.
