Laeger-Hagemeister to lead service at state park
The Rev. Jeff Laeger-Hagemeister, chaplain at St. John’s Lutheran Home in Albert Lea, will lead this Sunday’s ecumenical service at Myre-Big Island State Park.
The service begins at 8 a.m. In case of rain, it will be held in the picnic shelter.
Class of 1939 reunion is Friday
Albert Lea High School Class of 1939 will meet at noon Friday, July 10, at Trail’s. For more information, call Bob Pleiss at 373-1901.
50th Combat Engineers to hold annual reunion
The 50th Combat Engineers Co. A and Co. C plan to hold their annual reunion on July 18 at the Country Inn & Suites in the hospitality room. Some will arrive on the night of July 17, but the rest will come July 18.
The 50th Engineers were in World War II in the Pacific, Attu, Adak, Kiska, Kwajalein the Marshall Islands.
The History Channel came to Albert Lea in July 2005 to interview some of these men. The show aired in spring 2006, “Save Our History: Alaska’s Bloodiest Battle.”
Kermy and Delores Twito of Albert Lea started the Co. A reunions in 1950 in Albert Lea, and 10 years ago Co. C joined them, as so many had passed. Last year there were 10 men, but because their families come along there were 29 people at the banquet Saturday night.
Learning Center lists honor roll
The Area Learning Center has announced its honor roll for the fourth quarter of the 2008-09 school year. The following students were included, and are listed with their grade-point averages.
Jazmin Johnson, 3.9; Olivia Hedum, 3.8; Miranda Crawford, 3.7; Deviany Del Angel, 3.5; Alexa Jacobson, 3.5; Matthew Harmdierks, 3.5; Jade Johnson, 3.4; Michelle Guerrero, 3.3; Sarah Grausam, 3.2; Samantha Folven, 3.2; and Marissa Yost, 3.1.
Republicans hold party
The Freeborn County Republicans held a brat and beverage party on June 25. The event was held at Wedgewood Cove and featured State Rep. Bob Gunther from Fairmont. Gunther gave a legislative update, talked about possible candidates for governor, and his thoughts on upcoming issues locally and statewide. Al Bakken, chairman of the Freeborn County Watershed District, presented Gunther with a certificate of appreciation. The award honored Gunther for his work in helping the Freeborn County Watershed District gain an excess of $600,000 from the new state Environmental Fund.
The next Freeborn County Republican event will be a garden party on July 9. The women’s event will feature State Rep. Laura Broad from New Prague. The appetizer and dessert party will be held at Al and Pat Arends home, 1645 Massee St. from 5 to 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at Addie’s Floral or Hallmark.
