Inconsistent New Richland falls in twinbill

The consistency for the New Richland American Legion baseball team this season has been its inconsistency and Tuesday against Hayfield was no different.
Post 75 (2-10) struggled in the field and on the mound in a 16-9 loss in the first game of a doubleheader in New Richland while its bats weren’t up to snuff in a 3-2 loss in the second game.
“That’s the way it is usually,” said New Richland head coach Al Kraay. “Errors kill us, pitching is either good or bad. It depends on the night.”
Post 75 fell behind 12-4 after the second inning of the first game as it allowed nine hits, including a two-run homer in the first to Travis Kaufmann.
New Richland closed to 12-9 after the fourth inning, but Post 330 added four runs in the final two innings to pick up the win.
Post 75 was able to get its four runs in the fourth courtesy of Hayfield errors as two hitters reached on errors. Cody Kraay and Mitch Akemann had RBI singles to make it interesting, but New Richland went down in order the final two innings.
In the second game Hayfield starter Mark Evjen held Post 75 to just one hit through the first five innings. Evjen got help from his defense when first baseman Cody Dietrich turned in an unassisted double play in the first inning after Matt Tomsche was hit by a pitch to start the game.
Fielding miscues hurt New Richland in the second inning when Ben Pollock reached on an error, advanced to second on a wild pitch and later scored on a wild pitch to give Hayfield a 1-0 lead.
In the third Post 75 walked the No. 9 hitter, Evjen, to start the inning and Jarred Ellis drove him in with an RBI single. One batter later Evan Bungum followed with an RBI single to score Ellis as Post 330 took a 3-0 lead.
New Richland didn’t get on the board until the sixth inning and with two outs.
Mitch Akemann led off with a walk and Chad Schlaak got on with a base hit to start a threat, but Evjen got Tom Wacholz to ground into a double play to quickly stomp out the threat.
Colton Schlaak was able to deliver an RBI triple to score Chad Schlaak. Colton later scored on a wild pitch to make the game 3-2, but Post 330’s Pollock came on in relief and struck out the one hitter he faced.
New Richland faces Glenville-Emmons Thursday in Glenville.
