Lake Mills beats Osage in playoffs

It was playoff baseball at its finest Saturday as the Lake Mills baseball team faced Osage in the district playoffs in Osage.

Bulldogs starter Chris Throne locked up with Green Devils starter Trevor Molitor in a pitchers’ duel and Throne fared better in the duel with his two-hit shutout as Lake Mills (20-12) scored a 2-0 win.

Molitor allowed just one hit, but back-to-back walks to start the sixth inning proved to be the difference as Wade Hebrink hit a sacrifice fly to score Josh Zabel and Levi Dahle singled home Royce Byrnes.

“It was good for us to realize that we can win a close game where we’re not hitting the ball all over the ballpark,” said Bulldogs head coach Jason Blaser.

Lake Mills moves on to face St. Ansgar, the No. 1 ranked team in Class 2A in Iowa Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Osage.

The last time the two teams met the Saints swept a doubleheader in Lake Mills, but the Bulldogs dropped a 9-7 game and a 13-5 game.

“We know that we’ll have to play very well,” Blaser said. “They’re a very good team. At least playing them with them twice gives the kids the feeling that they can play with them.”
