Chapter 790 President Jerry Parmley of the Vietnam Veterans of America is inviting all veterans of all eras to a free veterans barbecue picnic on Saturday to honor servicemen from around the region.
He has seen this event grow larger every year as word of the social event has spread among veterans over the past years.
“Bringing veterans of all services from all eras together is what this event is all about,” said Parmley.Veterans are urged to each bring new veterans along to enjoy the camaraderie among all the age groups. New this year is the location of the picnic; it has been moved from Lake Mills, Iowa, to Northwood, Iowa, to accommodate rapid growth.
Sponsoring the picnic is Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 790, comprised of veterans from all branches of service living in northern Iowa and southern Minnesota. The picnic will be held at Swensrud Park in Northwood with serving to start at 1 p.m. (Swensrud Park is located directly behind the business district on main street of Northwood and along the river.) There will be burgers, brats and hot dogs, fresh-picked sweet corn, potato salad and lemonade.
“We always make room for a tremendous variety of side dishes, salads or desserts that folks bring to share — especially the desserts,” Parmley said.
The entertainment includes a USO program featuring local singers and patriotic music.
Contact Jerry or Linda Parmley at (641) 293-5131 if you have questions.
All family members are invited to attend also.
