Why can’t citizens speak to judges?

I know the governor appoints judges. We as “private citizens” are allowed to vote for our local judges. My question is: Why are we as “private citizens” not allowed to make an appointment to talk to a judge or at least write him a letter?
I was told by the court administrator’s office that judges don’t talk to “private citizens,” and if I would write a letter to a judge, it would be “thrown in the waste basket.” Why?
