Organizers of the Live United Disc Golf Outing have decided to go ahead with the event at 4 p.m. today in spite of rain this morning.
Flying Lea Disc Golf Club co-host Tim Engstrom, editor of the Albert Lea Tribune, and Ann Austin, executive director of the United Way of Freeborn County, announced at 11 a.m. they intend to go ahead with the start because it seems like the rain should let up by that time. And they said if the rain does fall, then going ahead with the disc golf contest is in keeping with the spirit of the sport.
“Disc golf tournaments, even at the pro level, are played in all kinds of weather,” Engstrom said. “It’s like football in that it takes something like lightning or a tornado to cancel them. Rain or wind is just part of the game.”
Austin said the Live United Disc Golf Outing is a fundraiser the local United Way officials hope will appeal to the young. She said even if this year the event is small, she is sure it will grow, just like the sport has been.
The entry fee is $10 per person or $30 per team. Teams comprise three players. It is a best-shot tournament. There are prizes for the top-three teams. Discs will be provided for players without them. The event’s sponsors are Nancy VanderWaerdt State Farm Insurance and Martin’s Cycling & Fitness.
