Herbert Schewe

Funeral services for Herbert Clifford Schewe, 82, of Albert Lea will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 14, 2009, at Bear Lake Lutheran Church. The Rev. Gary Hanson will officiate. Interment will be at Bear Lake Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13 at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Herbert died Wednesday Sept. 9, 2009, at his home.
Herbert Clifford Schewe was born on March 26, 1927, in Nunda Township to William Henry and Ida (Stern) Schewe. He grew up on the family farm in rural Albert Lea and graduated from Emmons High school. On Oct. 20, 1946, Herbert was united in marriage to Marvel Helland at the Lime Creek Lutheran Church. The couple made their home on Herbert’s family farm where they raised Brown Swiss cows. Farming was Herbert’s life and enjoyment. In 1993 the couple retired from farming and moved to Albert Lea. Herbert was a member of Bear Lake Lutheran Church, where he had served on church council. He was also a member of the Elks, Moose and Eagles Clubs. Through the years he served on the Emmons School Board, the Conger Elevator Board, the Conger Creamery Board, the Nunda Township Board, the ASCS Board and he served as a Freeborn County Commissioner. In all his activities, the most important to Herbert was the time he spent with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Marvel; children, Virgil and wife Jan Schewe of rural Albert Lea, Gaylen and wife Margaret Schewe of rural Glenville, Jerel and wife Julie Schewe of rural Twin Lakes, Bonnie and husband David Lair of rural Albert Lea, Doreen and husband Dean McCall of Robbinsdale, and Beth and husband Ried Peterson of rural Albert Lea; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sister Doris and husband Eddie Quinn of Freeborn; brothers-in-law, George Scott, Glen and wife Alicia Helland, and Floyd Helland and friend Penny; sisters-in-law, Maxine Helland, Leona Bye and Gertrude and husband Melvin Mattson; many nieces and nephews.
Herbert was preceded in death by parents; brothers, Arthur and Walter Schewe; sisters, Bernice and husband Carl Bangert, and Shirley and husband Lars Petersen.
