Air Force clarinet ensemble to perform Monday at ALHS

The United States Air Force Heartland of America Band’s New Horizons clarinet ensemble will perform at 7 p.m. Monday in the Albert Lea High School auditorium.

Admission to the concert is free, but those attending need a ticket to be admitted. Tickets are available at Doyle’s Hallmark, Tone Music, Community Education and Sanderson Auto.

The ensemble is comprised of the squadron’s finest clarinet players. Each member brings unique musical abilities to the stage, which allows the group to present diverse and entertaining programs. The group’s repertoire consists of traditional clarinet ensemble literature, polkas and patriotic favorites, to movie medleys and pop favorites by Journey and Taylor Swift.

Members of the group are also talented on piano and percussion instruments as well as vocals, vastly expanding the musical possibilities.

New Horizons represents more than 325,000 Air Force professionals around the world who diligently watch over the skies protecting and defending all those who cherish freedom.

Master Sgt. Allison L. Baugh joined the Heartland of America Band in March 2002. Baugh has also served in the Heritage of America Band at Langley Air Force Base, Va., and the United States Air Forces in Europe Band at Sembach Air Base, Germany. A native of Albuquerque, N.M., Baugh attended New Mexico State University in Las Cruces and then transferred to the University of Arizona in Tucson where she earned a bachelor of music performance degree with distinction. Baugh furthered her studies at the University of Missouri-Kansas City earning a master of music performance degree in 1989.

Tech. Sgt. Susan Govier has been a member of the Heartland of America Band since October 2001 and serves as the Noncommissioned Officer-In-Charge of New Horizons. A native of Lakewood, Colo., Govier attended the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, where she graduated in 1999 with a bachelor of music degree in clarinet performance. Govier continued her musical studies at Arizona State University in Tempe, where she received a master of music degree in clarinet performance in 2001. She has performed with the Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra and the Belgian clarinet ensemble, Claribel.

Staff Sgt. Clive James from Chicago arrived at Offutt Air Force Base in March 2002. He serves as clarinetist in the show band. James attended Northwestern University from 1986 to 1988 as a clarinet major, studying with Robert Marcellus, Clark Brody and Russell Dagon. Prior to joining the Air Force, James served as clarinetist with the Army Ground Forces Band in Atlanta. He has also performed with the Southern Crescent Symphony Orchestra, the U.S. Army Europe Band and the 77th Army Band.

Staff Sgt.Kimberly T. Miller, from Crestwood, Ky., arrived at Offutt AFB in 1998. She earned a bachelor of music education degree from Western Kentucky University at Bowling Green in 1996. She then went on to earn a master of music degree in clarinet performance from Arizona State University, Tempe, in 1998. Her teachers have included Robert Spring and Tod Kerstetter. She has performed with the Lyric Opera Theater Orchestra in Tempe, the Mesa Symphony Orchestra and the Bowling Green Western Symphony Orchestra.

Staff Sgt. Crystal L. Proper, a native of West Seneca, N.Y., came to Offutt AFB in October 2005. She received her bachelor of music degree in clarinet performance from Houghton College in 2000. Proper enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in May 2000 and was assigned to the United States Air Force Band of Flight, Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. She then transferred to the United States Air Force Academy Band, Peterson AFB, Colorado, before joining the Heartland of America Band. In May 2009 she was awarded her master of music degree in clarinet performance from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
