South Winneshiek’s high-powered offense was charged up Wednesday against Lake Mills in the substate round of the playoffs in Calmar.

The Warriors entered the playoffs sporting a tidy 8-1 record and an offense capable of putting up points in a hurry, which it displayed in a 42-6 victory over the Bulldogs in a Class 1A matchup.

South Winneshiek, ranked ninth in the latest Iowa AP prep football poll, averaged 44 points a game during the regular season and found a variety of ways to break the Lake Mills defense.

The big plays came quickly with Jordan Andrea breaking off a 60-yard touchdown run in the first half as South Winnesheik took a 26-0 lead into halftime.

The Bulldogs (5-5) were making their first playoff appearance since 2006 and couldn’t get much going with their running game early on.

“We kind of tried everything,” said Lake Mills head coach Bill Byrnes. “Sometimes the other team is just better than you.”

Bulldog senior running back Jake Brekken finished the game with 97 yards rushing and left the field as the school’s all-time leading rusher. Brekken needed 35 yards to break the record coming into the game and finished with 1,139 yards and 15 touchdowns.

A year after a 2-6 record, the Bulldogs improved to 5-4 in the regular season this year and Byrnes said he returns a strong nucleus next season to build upon.

Lake Mills graduates six seniors from this season.

South Winneshiek moves on to face Emmetsburg Monday, which defeated Aplington-Parkersburg 13-7 in overtime Tuesday in Emmetsburg.
