Doris Norby, 86

Funeral services for Doris L. Norby, 86, of Hartland will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Cross of Glory Lutheran Church in Hartland. The Rev. Dennis Frank will officiate. Interment will be in the Hartland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Doris died on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009, at Albert Lea Medical Center.
Doris LaVonne Norby was born on Sept. 5, 1923, in Ellington Township, Dodge County; the daughter of Charles and Emma (Rasmusson) Sandness. She was baptized in West Concord and later confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Richland. She attended school in Dodge County and later in New Richland, graduating from New Richland High School in 1941. On Nov. 2, 1941, Doris was united in marriage to Harley V. Norby in New Richland. Doris sold cosmetics for several years and worked for Birdseye in Waseca. She was a member of the Cross of Glory Lutheran Church and was parish secretary for both Cross of Glory and West Freeborn Lutheran churches. She and Harley served on the planning committee for the new church built in 1964. Doris was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the VFW Auxiliary and the Eagles Auxiliary. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting, cross-stitching, and refinishing and re-upholstering furniture. Doris also enjoyed cake decorating and made many cakes for many occasions over the years. She made a scale model of the new Cross of Glory Church for its dedication in 1964. Following Harley’s death, Doris moved to Hartland in 1987.
Survivors include her children: LaVonne Espeland of Waseca, Jeanette Schlicht-Fell of Waseca and Sandra Norby of Lawrenceville, Ga.; grandchildren: Kim Clark, Karen Villarreal (Lewis), Kent Clark (Gwen), Tony Espeland (Keri) and Annette Schlicht (Kenneth); 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Olga Jacobsen, of Faribault; and several nieces and nephews.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harley; three sons-in-law, two brothers; and four sisters.
