Be nice to clerks.

They work hard. They are not in charge. They don’t run the store. They usually are trying to provide you with hospitable services, often for low wages.

Clerks also are the first representatives for a community. If they are in a good mood about their work, they are more likely to make a better impression for the community when interacting with strangers.

In fact, as a rule, it is good to know the clerks at the stores you frequent.
