Sisters Jenna, Kelli and Shelby Lageson may not all live under the same roof anymore, but they all work under the same roof. The three sisters all work at the Kwik Trip convenience store on Front Street.
“It’s usually pretty good,” Jenna said. “Me and Kelli, we’re both shift leaders. Sometimes we clash, but we like to work together.”
The relationship between Kelli and Shelby is similar.
“I can get mad at her and get over it really quickly,” Kelli said of Shelby. “We get along well so it makes it really fun.”
Jenna, 24, has worked for Kwik Trip for more than eight years. She started at the East Main Street store. Jenna worked briefly at a Kwik Trip in Winona, then worked in Mankato during college and she got a social work degree. She started at the Front Street Kwik Trip in August of 2007.
The girls’ grandmother, Bonnie Flanagan, worked at the Main Street store until she retired, and they said that’s one of the main reasons Kelli and Jenna started there.
Shelby, 16, has worked at the Kwik Trip on Front Street for about six months and she decided to apply because her sisters worked there.
Kelli, 21, started working at the Kwik Trip across town in 2004, and transferred to a store in Mankato when she attended Minnesota State University, Mankato. She graduated in May with a degree in mass communication.
After a summer internship at children’s book publisher Abdo Publishing Co. in the Twin Cities, Kelli transferred to the Front Street store in August. Kelli hopes to a find a job in publishing.
Jenna and Kelli are both shift leaders so they don’t work together as often. Shelby typically works weekends and often works with one of her sisters.
Jenna works about 30 hours a week at Kwik Trip because she also works about 15 hours a week as the school social worker at Team Academy in Waseca. Shelby, a retail co-worker, works about 10-20 hours a week. Kelli works 40 hours a week.
Shelby described Jenna as someone who can get along with everyone, and she described Kelli as very fun but she someone who can also take charge.
Kelli described Jenna as someone who knows her stuff, is really personable and can mold herself to other people’s personalities. She described Shelby as a goofball: “She can be really quiet, but that’s because they don’t know her that well. She’s usually really loud and obnoxious.”
Jenna described Kelli as being very organized, and she said Shelby is very laid back and quiet.
The sisters have learned some things about one another since they started working together. Kelli said she didn’t realize Shelby was often shy and quiet around people she doesn’t know as well.
Shelby and Kelli live together at their parents’ house, and they said arguments can occasionally carry over between work and home, but they keep things professional.
“If I do something wrong, she can still yell at me about it at home,” Shelby said.
“Which I don’t do that often,” Kelli responded. “I’m helping you learn.”
The sisters said they rarely argue.
“If she’s back in the kitchen and I was mad at her before, I’m not going to want to go visit her as much as I would have, but we rarely argue” Kelli said.
“I can’t get mad at Kelli because she’s always right,” Shelby said with a laugh.
Even though Jenna now lives in Clarks Grove, Kelli said the three sisters spend a lot of time together.
Shelby said the sisters also frequently go out to eat and often go to Mexican restaurants.
Jenna and Kelli like to go shopping: “I don’t do that,” Shelby added.
According to Kelli, she and Shelby like a lot of the same books, such as “Twilight” and “Harry Potter.” She also said all three of the sisters like a lot of the same television shows.
The sisters often have movie nights, and Jenna said they watched the HBO television show “True Blood” on their previous movie night. She said the movie nights often include chick flicks and comfort food.
Kelli and Jenna like to go bowling. Shelby is in cross country and in mock trial.
“I just like all the extra quality time I get to get with you guys,” Shelby said.
“That’s the corniest thing you’ve ever said,” Kelli joked.
“I mean it,” Shelby said.
Kelli laughed and said it is nice to see her sisters at work.
