On Veterans Day 2009, wearing his World War II U.S. Marine uniform, Sgt. Maj. Merlin Steele introduced Roger Lonning, member and guest speaker at the Kiwanis Golden K II meeting. Lonning, with the assistance of Melvin Hobbiebrunken and Bob Pleiss, demonstrated the flag folding ceremony. Lonning then spoke about the “War Service Council of World War I” and “The History of Veterans Day.”
Four Golden K II members attended the Kiwanis Region 6 Governor’s Conference in Jackson on Oct. 24. Those attending from the club were: Cliff Rask, president; Roger Lonning, past president; Melvin Hobbiebrunken, vice president; and Jonathon Green, director.
Golden K II had a successful fundraiser selling coupon books for Herberger’s Community Day. Approximately $1,200 was raised and the money will be distributed to eight local non-profit organizations and two overseas non-profit organizations who are “Serving the Children of the World.”
Forty-three members and guests attended the annual Golden K II’s annual fall harvest banquet at the Freeborn County Historical Museum on Nov. 3. Cliff Rask, president, was the master of ceremonies. Linda Evenson, librarian at the Freeborn County Historical Museum, gave the program.
Interclub meetings in November were held with the Faribault Golden K II and the Mason City noon clubs. Members who attended one or both interclubs were: Melvin Hobbiebrunken, Terry Tarvestad, Al Landaas, Jonathon Green and Warren Behrends.
Golden K II’s upcoming programs include: Dec. 2: Earl Thompson, “Nepal Social Service;” Dec. 9: speaker from the Shellrock Watershed Committee; Dec. 16: Ken Nelson demonstrating and explaining the model “water control dam” he built.
Golden K meets each Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the Freeborn County Historical Museum. Guests are welcome.
