The local chapter of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program has a new leader.

Three weeks ago, Pat Stumme, formerly with KSMQ and the University of Minnesota Extension Office, started the position after former Director Beth Spande retired.

In her prior positions, Stumme said she had the opportunity to be the beneficiary of RSVP volunteers, so starting up in the organization was like coming home and finding good friends all over again.

“I knew the energy that RSVP people bring to the task,” Stumme said. “They just really claim the task and make sure that it gets completely done — and they have a good time doing it.”

She said there are 62 agencies that RSVP volunteers contribute to.

During an appreciation breakfast for RSVP volunteers in October there were more than 250 volunteers who came to be recognized, she said.

“The volunteering mindset is really, really important here in Freeborn County, and people are following through with it,” Stumme said.

RSVP began in Freeborn County in 1981. It receives some funding through the United Way of Freeborn County, the Minnesota Board on Aging, and the Corporation for National and Community Service.

Stumme said following Spande in the position has been the best opportunity because Spande really developed the program. She said she’s fortunate she got the job.

Stumme and her family have been in the Albert Lea community since 1986. They have two daughters and four granddaughters.

RSVP can be found at 1659 W. Main Street in Skyline Plaza and can be reached by phone at 377-7433.
