12 Cats of Christmas
Published 4:37 pm Saturday, December 12, 2009
On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me, a feline from the Humane Society.
The Humane Society of Freeborn County and the Albert Lea Animal Shelter are filled to capacity with cats in need of forever homes.
Here, the spotlight is on the Humane Society’s older cats. There are many kittens available for adoption as well.
For information on adopting any of these animals, contact the Humane Society at 377-8501, e-mail hs_of_fc@hotmail.com or check the Web site at www.hsffc.org. The Humane Society is working with the city of Albert Lea and houses many of its animals at the local shelter, as well as in foster homes. Albert Lea Animal Shelter hours are from 1 and 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and noon and 5 p.m. Fridays. Beginning Dec. 19, the shelter will also be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.
The public is invited and encouraged to help the homeless cats, kittens and dogs have a merry Christmas by filling stockings for them at the shelter. There are Christmas stockings for each cage.
Here are some things the Humane Society could use: cat and dog brushes, nail clippers for both cats and dogs, canned cat food, cat treats, dog treats, large rawhide dog bones, tennis balls for the dogs, cat toys, sturdy dog leashes for large dogs, collars for large dogs. For more information or to make arrangements to drop off gifts, please call 377-8501.
The shelter is located in Frank Hall Park.
Here are a few tidbits about some of the faces above.
All the felines are litter-box trained, up to date on shots and altered.
Ace
Ace is a very friendly, happy cat who would just love to be free of his cage and have a forever home in which to roam. He’s a big boy.
Belle
Belle is a young brown tabby mother. She’s quiet and friendly and loves attention. She’s a very good mother, taking in more kittens than her own.
Bonnie
Bonnie is a young tortoiseshell mother. She’s quiet and friendly and loves attention.
Fat Louie
Louie is almost all gray with a patch of white on his chest. He is declawed. He needs to be on a special diet and should be an only cat. Shelter life is wearing on Louie. He needs a home soon. He was surrendered by his owner.
Josie
Josie is a total lovebug whose favorite thing is being petted. Her soft, thick fur is almost all black, except for three white patches. Josie gets along very well with other cats. Her family was moving and couldn’t keep her.
Lucy
Lucy, a tortoiseshell, tends to be shy at first, but can warm up to people. If you put a blanket on your lap she will sit there for a little while, but she isn’t a big cuddler or lap cat. Lucy is independent. She really enjoys getting her chin scratched and being petted.
Naomi
Naomi is an affectionate girl who loves attention. She enjoys playing with her string toy. Her fur is very pretty, with a unique pattern of dots. She came in as a very frightened mother with kittens. With love and patience Naomi has blossomed into a loving and trusting cat.
