Editorial: The broad brush of news

It’s interesting to watch how different news outlets cover the Tiger and Elin Woods calamity.

And it is a good lesson in why not to lump the news media into a single bunch. They don’t act the same at all. In fact, it is a wide spectrum.

CNN, Fox News and MSNBC approach the topic with seriousness but at the same time hounds it to death because they have nothing better to fill their 24/7 broadcast with.

Though not leading on the story, ESPN nevertheless takes a thoughtful and distant sports approach, of course, as a news outlet that probably wants to maintain a good relationship with a big star.

Though likely far too few Americans following the story read the local Florida newspapers, they indeed deserve credit for getting accurate details in a swift and straightforward manner. TV journalism is far different than newspaper journalism.

Much has been made about celebrity gossip site TMZ.com and the tabloid paper National Enquirer breaking stories about allegations of infidelity. However, those claims remain to be proven true. If they are true, TMZ inches a few notches closer to credibility. If not, how low can they go. It’s a shame too many Americans rely on gossip outlets for news.

“E! News,” “Access Hollywood” or other celebrity news shows have absolutely no original news to share and only seem to exploit the hard work done by journalists elsewhere.

The lesson: Avoid saying “The Media” this and “The Media” that for any situation. These days, that’s far too broad of a brush to paint with.
