Editorial: Today is the first day of wintry roads

It snowed last night and, for the first time this season, it was cold enough for the snow to stick around.

In fact, it seemed just about the right temperature for the white stuff to become a thin sheet of slippery ice on the streets and roads this morning.

And we’re betting you probably know what that means:

Today is the annual Motorists Forget How To Drive In Wintry Conditions Day.

Even longtime Minnesota residents get out on the roads and fishtail here, slide through a stop there or check a curb or two. It’s a tradition.

As of 7 a.m., more snow was forecast. The National Weather Service said 1 to 2 inches of accumulation was possible. The high for today? A measly 28 degrees.

Please, drive safely out there. To the best of your ability, remember how to drive on snow-covered roads.

And if you don’t need to drive today, don’t. You might be better off letting everyone else get their first day of practice in.

(You can be thankful today that you do not live in a college town, where there are thousands of young drivers with little winter experience and many international students with zero winter experience.)
