Funeral services for Hilda D. “Hilly” Duncan, age 93, of Alden will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Alden. The Rev. Greg Ofsdahl will officiate. Interment will be in the Carlston Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday at the Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.
Hilly died Thursday, Dec.17, 2009, at her home in Alden.
Hilda Dorothea Duncan was born on Nov. 13, 1916, in Alden, the daughter of Carl and Maren (Raven) Mathiason. She went to country school and graduated from Alden High School and then went to beauty school in Minneapolis. On March 23, 1943, Hilly was united in marriage to Elvis Duncan at the Danish Lutheran Church in Alden. Hilly was self-employed for many years as a hairdresser in Alden. She was a life-long member of the Danish Lutheran Church — now Redeemer Lutheran. She also was a member of the Get Together Club and a bridge club and a 500 club. In the late 1950s Hilly was named the Freeborn County Mother of the Year. She enjoyed gardening, baking and cooking, reading, playing cards, entertaining friends and especially spending time with her family.
Survivors include her sons Jeffrey and wife Sandy Duncan of Prescott, Ariz., Joel and wife Diane Duncan and Jon and wife Sandy Duncan, all of Alden; grandchildren Terry and Tom Duncan of Red Wing, James and wife Hema Duncan of Tucson, Ariz., Justin Duncan of Alden, and Jenny and husband Matt Hendrickson of Freeborn; great-grandchildren Maleyka, Noah and Malachi Duncan, Madison Hendrickson, Dane Duncan, Blake Duncan and Alison and Ethen Duncan; great-great-grandson Camaron Duncan; sisters Betty Brandt of Tyler and Dagmar Jacobsen of Rice Lake, Wis.; sisters-in-law Stella Mathiason and Ardis Mathiason, both of Alden; and many nieces and nephews.
Hilly was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Elvis in June of 2009, and by brothers, sisters and in-laws.
