Rochester Mayo took the Albert Lea boys’ basketball team out of its rhythm Saturday with its full-court press and used its outside shooting well in a 60-39 victory at Albert Lea High School.

The Spartans made eight 3-pointers in the game and forced 27 Tigers turnovers.

Michael Franzone, Ian Hathaway and Sam Calcagno all scored in double figures with Hathaway and Franzone leading the team with 16 points each. Calcagno scored 13 for Mayo.

“The main thing that gave us problems was their press,” said Albert Lea head coach Lucas Kreuscher. “We’d either turn the ball over or rush our decision making on the other end. We had an extremely hard time getting into our offense when they pressed us.”

The Tigers (1-1) had an early lead, but quickly faded in the first half as the Spartans took a 32-17 halftime lead.

Albert Lea was led by Kyle Ooms’ nine points and Taylor Bordelon’s eight points.

The Tigers don’t play until Thursday and will have plenty of time to go over how to handle the press this week.

“We need to get a lot of things corrected,” Kreuscher said.
