The Minnesota Twins have designated righthander Boof Bonser for release or assignment to make room for starter Carl Pavano.

Pavano accepted Minnesota’s offer for arbitration on Monday night. That means the righthander will be in the Twins’ rotation next season.

Bonser had surgery on his pitching shoulder in spring training and missed all of last season. The 28-year-old has been both a reliever and a starter in his career with the Twins.

He went 3-7 with a 5.93 ERA in 2008 when he started the season in the rotation before being demoted to the bullpen. He is 18-25 with a 5.12 ERA in 163 career appearances for the Twins.

Pavano went 5-4 with a 4.64 ERA in 12 starts for the Twins after coming over in a trade from Cleveland in August.
