Scottie Upshall and Taylor Pyatt snapped a scoreless tie with second-period goals 44 seconds apart, Ilya Bryzgalov recorded his NHL-leading fourth shutout and the Phoenix Coyotes won their fifth straight, 2-0 over the Minnesota Wild on Monday night.
Bryzgalov made 28 saves and Pyatt scored for the third straight game after getting only one in his first 20 games. The Coyotes last won five in a row Dec. 31, 2007, to Jan. 8, 2008, and have built this one without scoring a single power-play goal (0-for-17).
The Coyotes haven’t given up much on special teams either, killing 19 straight penalties and 39 of the last 42, including all six chances against Minnesota.
The Wild had their five-game winning streak snapped and were 6-0-1 since losing to the Coyotes 3-2 in Minnesota on Nov. 18.
But Bryzgalov, who was 1-7-0 against the Wild coming into this season, won his 17th game of the season, one behind league-leader Martin Brodeur of New Jersey.
The first 30 minutes was a goaltending clinic featuring Minnesota’s Niklas Backstrom and Bryzgalov, who traded big saves on point-blank chances — especially in the second period. But the Coyotes broke through when Peter Muller set up Upshall, who had taken a hard hit along the boards second earlier, in front of the net at 10:30, for his team-leading eighth goal of the season.
